Avery W. Hall papers document Hall’s participation as a civic leader in Salisbury Maryland and surrounding regions from 1853-1889, 1932-1982 with the bulk of the material dating from 1945-1970. Hall’s leadership is identified through a series of political memorabilia including correspondence from Governor Millard Tawes and Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Also included in the collection are booklets from Avery W. Hall Insurance Agency relating to Peninsula Regional Hospital and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Project.

Chesapeake Bay Ship Plans

Folklife Collection - Following the Water

Judge Lloyd Simpkins collection

The Judge Lloyd Simpkins Collection contains a copy of the Captain John Smith map of the Chesapeake Bay in the early 1600s. Also included are two essays written by Judge Lloyd Simpkins. One is titled "Lower Delmarva's First Explorer" which discusses Captain John Smith, and "Somerset County 1500-1700", which discusses the history of Somerset County from 1524 to 1774.

K. King Burnett papers

The K. King Burnett papers encompass the executive activities and operations of numerous environmental organizations. These documents reflect the impact that preservation regulations had on the Delmarva Peninsula specifically, Wicomico and Worcester counties as it evolved from 1960 - 2014, and the entirety of the papers span from as early as 1894 - 2014. Burnett served as a legal advisor for these organizations. His papers contain numerous board of director reports which reflect by-law drafts and final copies, logistics proceedings regarding agency consolidation, and documents entailing litigation representation including the enforcement of environmental regulations. Organizations of note include Committee to Preserve Assateague Island, Wicomico Planning, Zoning, and Development Committee, and Greater Salisbury Committee.

Michael Lewis papers

The papers of Michael Lewis reflect research he and several students collected regarding Maryland environmental history after his arrival at Salisbury University in 2000. A significant portion of the papers pertain to the Delmarva Peninsula including the health of the Chesapeake Bay, Ocean City, and Maryland ecology. There is also research conducted on the transition of 20th century Delmarva agriculture and the poultry industry. The papers include several oral histories from Dr. Lewis’ colleagues, ornithologists from the Ward Museum, and Delmarva environmentalists. Many of the documents are facsimiles of their original whose origin dates from 1887-2009.

The Wayne Gilchrest papers document the political career of Congressman Wayne Gilchrest who represented Maryland’s 1st Congressional District, which includes Maryland’s Eastern Shore counties in addition to portions of Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties. The Wayne Gilchrest papers span his political career from 1989-2008, with the majority of the material dating from 1996-2008. The records encompass his extensive political career and are documented through volumes of correspondence and his congressional voting record including his environmental work and activism; as well as his opposition to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Also of note are his trips as a member of the Congressional Delegation throughout the United States and the world.
